3182 vs 3184 question

in having discussions w/ various people, i was told that the 3184 has a "tighter" bass response than the 3182. The 3182 had a little lower end though. Is this a fact or an opinion?

Hello Phil,
The performance of the 3182 & 3184 are different. However, it is still your decision as to the "sound" that you want as to which is best.

The 3184 will tend to provide more "impact" and the 3182 will tend to provide a "deeper" sound.

I use 3184's for sub-woofers in live situations. They are band limited from 22hz - 56hz as the 817 cabinet takes over from there. This system works incredibly well and the 3184 provides a sound that is not found in any other sub-woofer that I have used.

I have used the 3182 in the live appliciation and found that they did not perform well at all in that situation and I spent some time doing a few recones.

The cabinet also plays a major part in the performance of the driver, so you will have to decide how big a box you can have in your room.

The cabinet for the 3182 is much larger than the 3184.

Your room also plays a part in the performance of the sub-woofer. You can find that an 18inch driver does not perform as well as a 15inch driver in small rooms.

The other major factor is the amplifier used to drive the sub-woofer.

However, in my opinion, the 3184 does have a "tighter" bass performance than the 3182.

Thanks Murray for the info, still trying to decide which way to go. I will probably go the 3184's to get the "impact" response that seems to add firmness to the sound. Will probably build a seperate subwoofer for low end.
